- The minimum is a team jersey. Most teams aim for a light and a dark set so they never clash with an opponent.
- Uniforms in ultimate are almost always sublimated polyester: light, breathable and fully custom.

What ultimate frisbee teams wear
Ultimate frisbee uniform setups
Whether your club calls it a uniform, a kit or just “the jerseys”, the question is the same. What does a team actually need to wear to play ultimate, and what is worth adding later? This guide covers the pieces, the common setups, the rules that apply and what it all costs.
What ultimate frisbee teams wear
Ultimate uniforms are simple compared with most team sports. There are no pads or helmets. A team plays in matching tops and bottoms, cleats on grass, and bare feet or socks on sand.
What makes ultimate apparel different is the design. Teams almost always wear custom, fully sublimated jerseys with their own artwork, rather than a stock shirt with a printed logo. It is one of the most visible parts of the sport’s culture, and most clubs treat the jersey as their identity.

The practical takeaway: plan your uniform as a design project, not a clothing purchase. The rest of this guide helps you decide what goes into it.
Ultimate frisbee uniform setups
Most club teams fall into one of three setups. The right one depends on your budget, your roster and how often you travel to tournaments.
| Setup | What each player gets | Starting cost per player (incl. VAT) |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | One jersey | from 40 € |
| Standard | Light and dark jersey | from 80 € |
| Full uniform | Light and dark jersey plus shorts | from 110 € |
Shipping is added separately, and the minimum order is 10 pieces per item and design. For a worked example and a timeline, our guide to ordering your club’s first kit goes through each setup step by step.
A new club usually does best starting small. Get one jersey right, see how the roster settles, then add the second set and shorts the following season.
Ultimate frisbee jerseys
The jersey is the core of any ultimate uniform. A good one is light, dries fast, doesn’t restrict the throwing arm and carries a number you can read from the far sideline.
Sublimated jerseys
Ultimate jerseys are almost always sublimated. The design is dyed into the polyester, so it covers the whole shirt, adds no weight and has no print layer to crack. Our guide to sublimated jerseys explains the process and its limits.
Cuts and sizing
Manta Squadron custom ultimate jerseys come in a Loose cut and a Fitted cut, in sizes XXS to XXL. Players choose their own cut, and both can be mixed within one design. Use the jersey size chart and the mixed roster sizing guide to collect sizes.
Light and dark sets
Two jerseys per player means you never have to argue about who changes when colors clash. Design them together so both clearly belong to your club. Our color guide explains how to pick a pair that works.

Shorts and tank tops
Once the jerseys are sorted, shorts and tank tops are the two most common additions.
- Shorts.Matching shorts complete the look and are expected at higher-level events. Manta Squadron sublimated shorts come in a Standard cut and a Short cut, from 30 €. Our ultimate frisbee shorts guide covers length, fit and sizing.
- Tank tops.A sleeveless jersey for hot tournaments and beach ultimate. Sublimated tank tops come in the same Loose and Fitted cuts as the jerseys, from 35 €.
If the budget only stretches to one addition, most teams choose shorts. They are what makes a set of jerseys look like a uniform.
Ultimate frisbee uniform rules
The reason to care about uniform rules is practical for most teams. A readable number and a clear color difference make games easier to follow and photos easier to use. The rules themselves are a useful standard to design to, even if your league never checks.
The WFDF Rules of Ultimate appendix sets the base requirements for sanctioned play:
- Players wear a shirt and something covering the lower torso and upper legs.
- Each player has a unique whole number from 0 to 99.
- The back number is at least 16 cm tall with a 3 cm line, in one color with a contrast ratio of at least 6:1.
- Teams bring two distinct shirt sets to each game, with the difference visible to people with color vision deficiency.
Large WFDF events also follow the WFDF Uniform Guidelines, which recommend back numbers of 30 to 35 cm. National leagues and local tournaments set their own rules, and most hat tournaments and rec leagues don’t enforce anything. Check your league before approving the design. Our jersey number design guide covers sizes and contrast in detail.
Other ultimate frisbee gear
A uniform is only part of what a team needs. The rest is simple and mostly personal.
- Cleats for grass. Beach ultimate is usually played barefoot or in sand socks.
- Discs at the regulation 175 g weight used in competitive play.
- Sun protection, water and a layer for the sideline between games.
Manta Squadron makes the uniform itself: jerseys, tank tops and shorts. Hats, hoodies and flags are not available yet, so plan your first order around the core pieces.
Start with a jersey everyone is proud to wear, add the second set and shorts when you are ready, and your team will look like a team at its next tournament.
